Ashgabat is hosting a meeting of representatives of the competent authorities of the Caspian states to discuss a draft agreement on conservation and sustainable use of biological resources of the Caspian Sea. The meeting has been organized by the Turkmen Foreign Ministry and the State Enterprise for the Caspian Sea under the President of Turkmenistan. It is attended by the heads and senior staff of relevant ministries and departments on fisheries, natural resources and environmental protection and other state agencies of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan.
At the meeting, the participating countries set out proposals with the view of bringing their positions closer to each other on all the issues involved. These issues include the regulations on the use of biological resources, including fishing quotas for sturgeon, and coordination of national programs in the field of environmental protection. The meeting discussed in great detail the issue related to the restoration of fish resources, management of fishing activities in the sea. The participants supported the idea to develop a set of measures aimed at conserving the resources and environment of the Caspian Sea.
This is the third meeting of experts who are expected to develop a draft agreement on conservation and sustainable use of biological resources of the Caspian Sea for establishment of a mechanism of interaction of the Caspian countries in this field. The previous two meetings were held in Ashgabat in 2012.
