The 3rd international scientific expedition to Koytendag (mountain range in Turkmenistan’s east, which is home to unique natural monuments) has come to end. The expedition team consisted of scientists of the Royal Society for Protection of Birds (UK), who are UNESCO international experts on the World Natural Heritage, as well as scientists, botanists, biologists, ornithologists from Bulgaria, Romania and other countries.
Turkmen scientists – members of the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, specialists of the Ministry of Nature Protection and the State Committee on Tourism – also participated in the expedition.
As the Turkmenistan.ru Ashgabat correspondent reports with reference to the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, the eight-day expedition carried out a comprehensive research of fauna, geological heritage, as well as the work on identification of areas with endemic and medicinal plants within the territory of Koytendag reserve.
The data collected in the course of the international expedition will be included in the final version of the nomination dossier to be submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2014 for inclusion of Koytendag natural sites in the List of World Natural Heritage.
