Turkmenistan and UNDP to strengthen partnership in national capacity development and institutional buildingThe Government of Turkmenistan and UNDP have agreed to increase government cost-sharing for UNDP activities in the country. Such statement was made during the visit of Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu, UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS.
During her 3 day visit on 18-21 December 2013, Ms. Sultanoglu had meetings with the President of Turkmenistan H.E. The UNDP Regional Director discussed at the highest level increasing government cost-sharing for UNDP projects commensurate with Turkmenistan’s status of upper middle income country, strengthening national ownership and creating an interaction mechanism whereby the Government will communicate in what areas of national priority the support from UNDP will be needed.

Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu noted the progress Turkmenistan has made in its social-economic development and encouraged the Turkmen authorities to provide wider access to international organizations and the public to development related data in order to ascertain, recognize and acknowledge where the country is developing well and to identify where greater attention is required over the long term in keeping with many UN conventions the country has ratified.“UNDP stands ready and willing to assist the government to improve its data collection and analysis systems for all key sectors coordinated by the National State Statistics Committee. “We are very pleased to start develop as UN agencies a three-five year programme of support to the National Statistics Committee”, said UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Assistant Administrator.
